Honey bees are not native to the U.S. but have a long history of pollinating crops and
providing honey. Bees entered our slang through such expressions as "bee's knees"
and "busy as a bee". Since colonial times, a "bee" referred to a meeting of people
to work together for the benefit of the group. Our agriculture depends on honey bees, but we
have a limited understanding of what drives bee colony health, as shown by the large-scale
colony collapse disorder affecting hives after the winter of 2006-07. The USDA conjectures that multiple factors can lead to
the abandonment of an apparently healthy hive, such as mites influencing the spread of certain
viruses to hives. This necklace features a small 14kt gold-fill honey bee on a sterling silver honeycomb atop
a solid copper rectangle hanging from an 18" 14kt gold-fill box chain. This mixed metal pendant
is approximately 1 1/4" long. Spring ring clasp.
