Pierre-Joseph Redoute painted botanticals under the patronage of Marie Antoinette
and Josephine Bonaparte. His watercolors of roses, lilies and other flowers at the
Château de Malmaison earned him the nickname of "the Raphael of flowers."
Jelaluddin Rumi was born in 1207 near the city of Balkh, on the eastern edge of the
Persian empire. He came from a long line of Islamic jurists, theologians, and mystics; his
father was the head of a dervish learning community in Turkey, a position which Rumi took
over when his father died. Rumi is known best for his poetry and its exploration of the
human and the divine, and the excerpts in these cards are taken from The Soul of Rumi:
A New Collection of Ecstatic Poems translated by Coleman Barks.
