Like other opals, Peruvian opal is a sedimentary rock that forms though deposition of
silicates, though it lacks the play of color. Instead, the opal of the Andes shows
lovely natural blue-green color with dark dendritic inclusions. Peruvian opals form only
in the Andes, a gift from Pachamama, the Incan fertility goddess who embodies the mountains.
Tipon is an Incan city about 25km from Cusco known for its innovative and elegant use of
irrigation. The mountain city has thirteen terraces with stone walls and waterfalls; although
the city was built over 500 years ago, water still flows in channels to
fields and baths. The American Society of Civil Engineers has designated Tipon as
an engineering landmark, a masterpiece of engineering planning, design and construction.
The design of this 19" necklace is simple, but it highlights the beauty of the
opal, in which colors of water and earth mix and flow. Sterling silver toggle clasp.
