Journeying to the stars continues to trigger our imagination and our desire for
exploration. Science fiction emerged nearly 300 hundred years with Gulliver's Travels
written by Jonathan Swift in which the title character embarks on explorations to
fantastic societies, followed by Mary Shelley's nightmare scientific monster in
Frankenstein in 1818. Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke, and Robert A. Heinlein
are the most well known science fiction writers, creating such stories as I, Robot and
Starship Troopers which feature the conventional stories of humans, technology, and
often disastrous combinations thereof. Ursula Le Guin was one of the first women authors
to break into science fiction with The Left Hand of Darkness and The Dispossessed,
both which gender-bending narratives and thoughtful reflections on extraterrestrial societies.
This 18" patina copper necklace celebrates traditional icons from science fiction:
a sterling silver spaceship and a 14kt gold-fill Saturn-like planet (with rings). These are
attached to a colorful patina copper disc and hang from the patina copper bar and cable chain
that fastens with a 14kt gold-fill magnetic clasp.
