For ancient Egyptians, the river Ar (meaning black) was the source of life: rich black alluvial
soil for crops and thousands of river miles for trading. The region recieves little to no rain and
without annual flooding of the Nile delivering fertile soil and providing water for irrigation, there
would have been no Great Pyramids and likely no Egyptian civilization. Being a river trader was a
respected profession, like being a scribe. Egyptians traded gold, papyrus, linen and grain for
copper, iron, cedar wood, ivory and lapis lazuli.
Imagine the sun slowing rising over the low horizon as the reed boat nudges into the steady
current. You are not a pharoh, priestess or even a mistress of the house; you're a river merchant
and the glass beads, shell and small amounts of gold are pieces
accumulated along the way and wound into a unique 19" necklace. The pendant is a combination of
blister pearl shell and a gold-plate pewter pendant with embossed hieroglyphics.
