Pinus ponderosa is one of the most common pines in the Rocky Mountain areas
of the United States, Canada and Mexico. It's the first tall pine to appear in elevations above
pinyon pine and juniper woodland regions in the desert southwest and high dry plains
of the Great Basin. Most subspecies of the Ponderosa Pine have clusters of 3 long curving needles
per fascicle (bundle); those are represented by the doubled over copper wire in the necklace wrapped with
sterling silver wire. The bundles of "pine needles" are then further wrapped by 14kt gold-fill wire
to form an elegant collar of needle bundles. These are attached to a large link sterling silver
chain with lobster clasp that allows several inches of length adjustment; though lightweight, the
wire needles are stiff and some adjustment may be necessary in order for them to lay flat.
Although I was striving for some realism, I did file the copper wire to smoothness to prevent the
sharp jabs one experiences with real needles!
