The use of "coin" shaped beads - both the turquoise and the dyed freshwater pearls - implied currency. Spanish "pieces of eight" may be the stuff of high sea adventure and treasure, but their abundance in the American Colonies and Caribbean resulted from a far more practical reason: a lack of British coins. Great Britain had few sources of precious metals, and most British currency remained in Britain and the Colonies traded with foreign currency. The copper wire features add interest and whimsy to a colorful and casual necklace. Necklace is secured with copper hook & eye clasp.

Length: necklace - 17 1/2"

Materials:

  • turquoise beads
  • dyed freshwater coin pearls
  • copper wire
  • copper beads
  • copper hook & eye clasp
  • Soft Flex moderate duty nylon coated stainless steel cord (30 lb. load test)

Care & cleaning: Beading cord may be kinked or broken through hard jerks or severed through prolonged exposure to rough or sharp edges; store necklace flat when not in use to prevent stretching or kinking cord. Clean with warm soapy water and avoid chemical or abrasive cleaners. Use a soft jewelry polishing cloth to clean tarnish appearing on metal.

The components and beading cord should be robust to toddler tugs and pulls, though both the turquoise and pearls are softer materials so care should be taken not to crush them (such as stepping on them, dropping weight on them, etc). As with all beaded jewelry: do not let young toddlers chew on it.
