Fluorite is a commonly occurring mineral with uncommon properties: it fluoresces in blue light and is the only mineral with four planes of perfect cleavage. Fluorite is often found with metallic ores as it forms through hydrothermal deposition. Yet, fluorite is probably best known for its distinctive coloring of bright blue-green to purple and yellow with banding. The tumbled polished nuggets in this 17" necklace range from deep purple to pale aqua, and they flow fluidly thanks to the strong silk cord onto which they are strung. The use of hand-knotted pure silk cord is not practical for necklaces with large beads or beads with hard or sharp edges, but when silk cord can be used the amazing drape of the necklace is worth the effort. Clasp is a sterling silver toggle.

Length: necklace - 17"

Materials:

  • fluorite nuggets
  • sterling silver components
  • sterling silver toggle clasp
  • hand-knotted pure silk cord

Care & cleaning: Beading cord may be frayed or severed through hard jerks or prolonged exposure to rough or sharp edges; store necklace flat when not in use to prevent stretching or fraying cord. Clean with warm soapy water and avoid chemical or abrasive cleaners. Use a soft jewelry polishing cloth to clean tarnish appearing on metal.

The materials and cord in this necklace are robust to tugs and pulls from most activities but care should be taken to avoid hard impacts which can break the stone (fluorite cleaves easily) and sustained hard pulls which can stretch the silk cord. As with all beaded jewelry: do not let young toddlers chew on it.

This 17" necklace works well with most scoop necks or v-necks, but the volume of the stones may not pair well with blazers.
