Family Araucariaeceae includes an ancient family of coniferous trees that flourished worldwide in the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods, and it's a likely contributor to beds of jet found today. Jet is a kind of lignite coal, and most lignite coal derives from peat (decaying vegetable matter); however, jet derives from decomposing wood under high pressure. Trees of the family Araucariaeceae were typically very tall evergreen trees with spirally arranged leaves. The petrified wood of Arizona's Petrified Forest belong to several species of this family, and modern day species include the New Zealand kauri tree and the monkey puzzle tree. Jet was popular in Roman times and again during Victorian England, when Queen Victoria wore jet jewelry as part of mourning following the death of Prince Albert. The lustrous jet beads are combined with hand-crafted lampwork glass beads from Unicorne Beads studio for a smooth and lovely necklace.

Length: necklace - 19"

Materials:

  • jet beads
  • lampwork glass teardrops
  • Czech glass faceted beads
  • 14kt gold-fill beads
  • vermeil hook & eye clasp
  • Soft Flex moderate duty nylon coated stainless steel wire (30 lb. load test)

Care & cleaning: Beading cord may be kinked or broken through hard jerks or severed through prolonged exposure to rough or sharp edges; store necklace flat when not in use to prevent stretching or kinking cord. Clean with warm soapy water and avoid chemical or abrasive cleaners. Use a soft jewelry polishing cloth to clean tarnish appearing on metal.

Jet is a soft material (Mohs hardness of 2 - 2 1/2) so it's recommended to keep this out of reach of young hands. As with all beaded jewelry: do not let young toddlers chew on it.
