While coincident with Halloween and All Saints Day, the "Day of the Dead" holiday celebrated in
Mexico and other countries in Central and South America has separate roots of tradition.
The Day of the Dead originated with Aztec and other Nahua people as a time to welcome
deceased loved ones back to their families in spirit. The sugar skulls and face-painting appeared
after the 1900s when Mexican political cartoonist Guadalupe Posada put a "face" to the tradition
of literary calaveras (satirical poetic tombstone epitaphs). The artist Diego Rivera featured
one of Posada's stylized skeletons, and the rest is history. These 2 1/2" drop mismatched
earrings feature a patina brass drop with calaveras and stack of lampwork glass beads like
sugar candy. Components and earwires are copper. Select either a blue-green or pink-yellow background to the
calaveras design.
