We meet Circe in The Odyssey; she was the beautiful enchantress
that turned Odysseus' men into swine, then happily changed them back into men when
Odysseus showed himself to be in Hermes' favor and immune to her transformative drink
(thanks to an herbal gift). You might think that after that, everyone would be
eager to move on but that was not so. Circe was a charming hostess: she fed them
well and generally provided for their comfort and ease, which was probably welcome after
wandering for years and watching their comrades being eaten by the Cyclops. Kyanite is
named for the Greek "kyanos" meaning "deep blue", and it is
a beautiful blue stone with a triclinic crystal structure, leading to longer, bladed shapes.
It can also be called "disthene" meaning "two strengths", in reference to
the different Mohs hardness parallel or perpendicular to its longitudinal axis. The quality of
showing two strengths seems appropriate when considering her behavior towards Odysseus and his men; fine wine
and perfumed baths are quite different from a diet of acorns and confinement to a sty as pigs.
Iolite comes from the Greek for "violet" and this deep blue-purple gemstone is stunning,
especially when the pleochroic nature (appearing as different colors depending on viewing angle) is
strong. These stones are set in sterling silver by the talented artisans of SilverRocks, and the
pendant is paired with a thin twist sterling silver chain.
