Opal enhances creativity and communication, which makes it the perfect gemstone for
inspiration when writing a letter. Opal forms when water rich in silica evaporates, leaving
behind the silica in the cracks and layers of sedimentary stone. As such, opals are up to
20% water, and rough opals can crack if they are dried too quickly. Australia is the
world's leading supplier of opals because many areas of the continent are favorable to
opal formation (soaking rains in sedimentary stones combined with hot arid conditions).
Opals are a soft gemstone but stable, and they will last generations if handled properly.
The opal in this 16" sterling silver necklace is set in sterling silver by artisans
of SilverRocks, and the approximately 1/2" pendant hangs from a thick sterling silver
snake chain with lobster claw clasp. This is a lovely shining gemstone with excellent
play of color that was purchased years ago before the jump in precious metal prices.
