Although Nefertiti is better known for her elegant beauty (as shown by the
portrait bust displayed in Berlin's Neues Museum), she helped establish the worship
of the Aten (sun god as solar disc) with Akhenaten during their brief reign around 1350 BCE. Akhenaten
had changed his name from Amenhotep and redirected revenue from the traditional Egyptian
temples for Amun to the new religion of the Aten. After Akhenaten's death, the state religion
returned to Amun and Akenaten's son Tutankhaten changed his name to Tutankhamun.
No sign of this 20 year dynamic upheaval shows in this 18" necklace made with precious
materials of the time: lapis lazuli gemstone, pearls, and gold. The hammered 14kt gold-fill
disc is like the Aten, and it hangs from a thin gemstone strand with lapis spaced with gold beads
and hand knotted freshwater pearls. (Silk cord yields the most fluid drape
in beaded jewelry.) The necklace fastens with a 14kt gold-fill lobster claw clasp.
