Many of the lovely faceted gemstones available for beaded jewelry come from mines and gem cutting
factories in India. Although more subdued than traditional Indian jewelry, this design features
a geometric, symmetric pattern of pearls and gemstones that is reminiscent of the beautiful collar
style seen in the jewelry. In Afternoon Raag, a short novel by Amit Chaudhuri, the narrator
describes his mother practicing scales for a raag (classicial Hindu melody) or relaxing and waiting
for his father to join her for tea. He remembers his music teacher, and the sounds of the raags stirring
the house in smooth swells, rising and falling, blending with hum in the house, the servants
and family members, all part of an intricate pattern. Both the oppressive heat of the outdoors but
quiet stillness and relative coolness of the home are present; the drowsy afternoon hours give way
to the more active hours of evening and conversation. I live in the desert so I appreciate this shift,
when the day moves from heat so intense it presses one into the ground to something a little milder,
when one can sit outside in the swirling eddies, thankful the sun has set. This necklace is lightweight
but elegant, perfect for a summer evening on the patio with iced drink in hand.

Though tanzanite is a fairly tough mineral (Mohs hardness 6 - 7), the top-drilled faceted teardrops
can be thin near the top of the stone and chip or break with impact or hard tugging, and this is
why I would keep this out of younger hands.
As with
all beaded jewelry: do not let young toddlers chew on it.
