With her droll observation that "a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife", Jane Austen leads us through the drawing rooms and country houses of 18th century England with understated grace and dry humor. She lived in the Georgian period, in a time when the printed word was more widely available through weekly or daily newspapers, and she found family support in her father and brother for her writing. Her letters to her older sister Cassandra are largely filled with household matters and balls and greetings from neighbors, but Jane is as much herself in her letters as in her books:

My mother desires me to tell you that I am avery good housekeeper, which I have no reluctance to doing, because I really think it my peculiar excellence, and for this reason - I always take care to provide such things as please my own appetite, which I consider as the chief merit in housekeeping. I have had some ragout veal, and I mean to have some haricot mutton to-morrow. We are to kill a pig soon.

Mrs. Hall, of Sherborne, was brought to bed yesterday of a dead child, some weeks before she expected, owing to a fright. I suppose she happened unawares to look at her husband.

Charles Powelett gave a dance on Thursday, to the great disturbance of all his neighbours, of course, who, you know, take a most lively interest in the state of his finances, and live in hopes of his being soon ruined.

Tanzanite is the gemstone featured in the necklace; it is a dark blue variety of zoisite (a "sister" silicate in which an oxygen atom is shared between tetrahedra) colored by vanadium. It is fairly rare, found in Tanzania and Pakistan, and the most valuable of the zoisites. Most tanzanite for beaded jewelry are sold in this form of small polished or faceted rondelles.

Length: necklace - 24"

Materials:

  • tanzanite gemstone beads
  • freshwater pearl beads
  • sterling silver beads
  • 14kt gold-fill beads
  • 14kt gold-fill filigree box clasp
  • Soft Touch light duty nylon coated stainless steel cord (10 lb. load test)

Care & cleaning: Beading cord may be kinked or broken through hard jerks or severed through prolonged exposure to rough or sharp edges; store necklace flat when not in use to prevent stretching or kinking cord. Clean with warm soapy water and avoid chemical or abrasive cleaners. The tanzanite stones required a small diameter beading cord and therefore, greater care is needed to avoid snagging the necklace or otherwise applying sharp force.

The Soft Touch beading cord is strong for its diameter, but the small diameter means that the necklace is more vulnerable to breakage, and for this reason, I recommend keeping out of the reach of young kids. As with all beaded jewelry: do not let young toddlers chew on it.

Not all jewelry - particularly beaded jewelry - work well with all necklines. This necklace is versatile in length and style. The long 24" length works well with high, medium and low necklines, and the necklace style can be worn equally well with t-shirt and jeans or an evening shift dress. The long, even style can also be worn as a wrap bracelet.
