This earthy brown, green, and gold 22" necklace features a side profile representation of the
famous bust of Nefertiti, one of the most interesting and mysterious women of ancient Egypt.
Even her name is unusual; it translates as "A Beautiful Woman Has Come" though her
origins are relatively unknown. Her father might have been Ay, a courtier and brother to
Queen Tiye, Akhenaten's mother. Nefertiti had six daughters in ten years with Akhenaten, the 18th
dynasty pharoh who shifted the state capital to Amarna and state religion to the Aten rather than Amun.
Akhenaten was father to Tutankhaten (later Tutankhamun, with the return of Amun in a central role),
though Nefertiti
was not King Tut's mother. Nefertiti received little attention until 1912, when German
archaeologist Ludwig Borchardt discovered her portrait bust in the ruins of an
Amarna workshop.
The necklace consists of marble stones spaced with wood and gold-plated brass beads. Limestone was one of the building materials in ancient Egypt, and marble is a metamorphic form of limestone. The golden pendant hangs from a curved tube with a large Korean boxwood drop, and the necklace fastens with a golden toggle clasp. Cost: $68.00 USD
