Noosa Heads is a suburb of the Shire of Noosa on Australia's Sunshine Coast located north of Brisbane, the capital of Queensland. Opals are found throughout the inland areas of Queensland, New South Wales and South Australia, but it is the sunshine and glittering color of the coast encased in these beautiful precious stones. Opal forms as silica-rich waters flow over material and deposit thin layers of silica. Precious opal, with the characteristic "play of fire" caused by the diffraction of light through the silica gel, forms only in areas in which silica settles slowly and undisturbed over time, such as inside another rock. Some sources say that opals can dry out and crack over time; others say this is a myth and whatever water is in the stone is in the stone to stay. Opals are softer than other silicates like quartz, and they can crack under pressure or impact, just like other gemstones. The popular Delica Japanese glass seedbeads are set between the opals for better drape and flexibility.

Length: necklace - 28"

Materials:

  • Australian opal beads
  • Czech glass beads
  • Japanese glass seedbeads
  • sterling silver beads
  • sterling silver toggle clasp
  • Power Pro moderate duty braided Spectra Fiber™ (30 lb. load test)

Care & cleaning: Beading cord may be kinked or broken through hard jerks or severed through prolonged exposure to rough or sharp edges; store necklace flat when not in use to prevent stretching or kinking cord. Clean with warm soapy water and avoid chemical or abrasive cleaners. Use a soft jewelry polishing cloth to clean tarnish appearing on silver.

The beading cord and components are lightweight but strong, but the opal rondelles are interspersed with delicate Japanese glass seedbeads that can be crushed with hard pressure. As with all beaded jewelry: do not let young toddlers chew on it.

This 28" necklace is a long, thin profile single strand necklace or high choker double strand necklace. It can also be wrapped multiple times for a terrific bracelet. The opals are luminous though light in color and the necklace could be overwhelmed paired with bold patterns, but otherwise, it is a versatile and classic piece of beaded jewelry.
