A challenge with sculptural jewelry is to create wearable pieces. A necklace may be visually
stunning but is not practical for use if it can't be worn. The rectangular stones in this
17" multi-strand necklace are designed to fit together like a mosaic for a band of
pale stone spaced with smooth dark hemalyke (a man-made version of hematite). The bottom strands
are made of feldspar, and the upper strands are made of "new jade," a kind of
cool blue-green serpentine. The strands attach to sterling silver links, and the necklace
fastens with a sterling silver toggle clasp.
