In Greek mythology, Maia is the daughter of Atlas and Pleione the Oceanid and is the oldest of the seven Pleiades. Maia is also the mother of Hermes by Zeus and known for gentle wisdom. Renowned for their beauty and grace, the Pleiades circle the horizon in a constellation well known to sailors, guiding them on voyages and marking the change of seasons in the northern hemisphere.
