Be bolder with this Boulder necklace! The stones featured are boulder opals from
areas in Queensland, Australia. Boulder opals differ from other opals in that they
form in very thin veins in cracks and fissures of hard ironstone boulders, and because
they are so thin, it's common to see these opals still attached to the solid brown ironstone.
The interplay of opal and stone leads to great color and terrific patterns, such as in
the stones here. Opal is an amorphous silicate, which means it has the same chemical
composition as stones like quartz, but without the more consistent crystalline
organization. It contains 3% - 10% water (water molecules
are trapped in voids) and it's this water that diffracts light for the awesome play of color
in the stone. The opals are paired with rainbow moonstone, a feldspar that also shows
shimmering color but from a different effect (light scattering off parallel planes rather
than bending through diffraction).
