The story is perhaps obvious; the beads are dyed an invigorating bright green, inviting like peas fresh from the pod. "Chalk turquoise" is the name given to these soft porous chalk beads, though there is technically no turquoise! The material simply forms in similar conditions, though without the influence of copper or related elements. Also like some turquoise, it has been stabilized with clear resin to strengthen it against wear.

Length: necklace - 16"

Materials:

  • dyed chalk turquoise beads
  • sterling silver spacers
  • sterling silver peas charm
  • sterling silver toggle clasp
  • SoftFlex moderate duty nylon-coated stainless steel cord (30 lb load test)

Care & cleaning: Beading cord may be kinked or broken through hard jerks or severed through prolonged exposure to rough or sharp edges; store necklace flat when not in use to prevent stretching or kinking cord. Clean with warm soapy water and avoid chemical or abrasive cleaners. Use a soft jewelry polishing cloth to clean tarnish appearing on silver.

The most delicate items in this necklace are the chalk beads; they have a moderate hardness and can be cracked or broken with a sharp blow. However, the necklace will survive tugging and pulling. As with all beaded jewelry: do not let young toddlers chew on it.

Not all jewelry - particularly beaded jewelry - work well with all necklines. The 16" necklace is a choker length, which means it will rest on or slightly above the collar bone for most women. The shorter length may be difficult to pair with crew necks; look for a lower crew neck, shallow scoop neck or standard V-neck but deep scoop necks or V-necks may cause the necklace to appear "abandoned" or otherwise out of proportion on the neck. Also, the smaller scale of the stones might be lost under a collared shirt. This necklace pairs well with a variety of other necklaces; see the necklace-pairing ideas on the pinot grigio page!
