George Herbert was the 5th Earl of Carnarvon, also known as Lord Carnarvon, who lived in Highclere Castle and financed the excavation of King Tutankhamun's tomb in the Valley of the Kings. He died in Cairo in 1923 of blood poisoning most likely from an infected razor with his wife, the wealthy American Lady Almina, by his side. Other stories branch from their story; Agatha Christie using an infected razor to eliminate inconvenient patients of a clever doctor, Cora Crawley establishing Downton Abbey as a hospital during World War I. This is a regal necklace in the style of Egyptian queens with substantial weight and not for the timid. The gemstones are glorious examples of the impact of trace elements and subtle differences in crystal formation: amethyst and citrine are nearly identical in chemical composition, though different in color. Ametrine is the name given to gemstones showing transition regions of purple amethyst to golden yellow citrine. These gemstones are large, beautiful and unique for a striking and inspirational necklace.

Length: necklace - adjustable between 20"-24" (pictures show length of approximately 22")

Materials:

  • ametrine gemstones
  • brushed gold-plated copper petals
  • 14kt 1/20th gold-fill beads
  • 14kt 1/20th gold-fill open link chain
  • vermeil lobster clasp
  • SoftFlex nylon-coated stainless steel cord (30 lb load test)

Care & cleaning: Beading cord may be kinked or broken through hard jerks or severed through prolonged exposure to rough or sharp edges; store necklace flat when not in use to prevent stretching or kinking cord. Clean with warm soapy water and avoid chemical or abrasive cleaners.

In truth, this necklace is robust and could handle a fair amount of toddler tugging. However, the stones are large and relatively heavy and it's for this reason I recommend handling it with care. As with all beaded jewelry: do not let young toddlers chew on it.

Not all jewelry - particularly beaded jewelry - work well with all necklines. Although the necklace can be long (24"), the size and drape of the stones will tend to make it appear shorter. It is worn best when draped over the shoulders, like a beautiful gemstone statement. It complements warm or cool neutral hues and pairs well with casual or dress clothing. It is a heavy necklace but definitely special.
