George Herbert was the 5th Earl of Carnarvon, also known as Lord Carnarvon, who lived in
Highclere Castle and financed the excavation of King Tutankhamun's tomb in the Valley of
the Kings. He died in Cairo in 1923 of blood poisoning most likely from an infected razor with
his wife, the wealthy American Lady Almina, by his side. Other stories branch from their story;
Agatha Christie using an infected razor to eliminate inconvenient patients of a clever doctor,
Cora Crawley establishing Downton Abbey as a hospital during World War I. This is a regal necklace
in the style of Egyptian queens with substantial weight and not for the timid.
The gemstones are glorious examples of the impact
of trace elements and subtle differences in crystal formation: amethyst and citrine are
nearly identical in chemical composition, though
different in color. Ametrine is the name given to gemstones showing transition regions of
purple amethyst to golden yellow citrine. These gemstones are large, beautiful and unique for
a striking and inspirational necklace.
