Larvikite is a kind of granite that is only found near the town of Larvik, Norway. It contains
large crystals of feldspar, which are responsible for the schiller effect much like in
labradorite. In fact, larvikite is sometimes called "blue labradorite" though technically
it's not a feldspar mineral. As granite, it has a popular and practical use: kitchen counter
tops. Larvikite is a popular choice for counter tops, and it's reasonable for one to pause
to consider the transition between kitchen material and jewelry item. Lucite is another example
of such a dual-purpose material. Unlike lucite, larvikite has substantial heft so this is not
a lightweight necklace! At 20" it is a good statement piece, and the flat stones drape
well.
