Larvikite is a kind of granite that is only found near the town of Larvik, Norway. It contains large crystals of feldspar, which are responsible for the schiller effect much like in labradorite. In fact, larvikite is sometimes called "blue labradorite" though technically it's not a feldspar mineral. As granite, it has a popular and practical use: kitchen counter tops. Larvikite is a popular choice for counter tops, and it's reasonable for one to pause to consider the transition between kitchen material and jewelry item. Lucite is another example of such a dual-purpose material. Unlike lucite, larvikite has substantial heft so this is not a lightweight necklace! At 20" it is a good statement piece, and the flat stones drape well.

Length: necklace - 20"

Materials:

  • larvikite beads
  • brushed sterling silver beads
  • sterling silver beads
  • sterling silver toggle clasp
  • Soft Flex heavy duty nylon coated stainless steel cord (40 lb. load test)

Care & cleaning: Beading cord may be kinked or broken through hard jerks or severed through prolonged exposure to rough or sharp edges; store necklace flat when not in use to prevent stretching or kinking cord. Clean with warm soapy water and avoid chemical or abrasive cleaners. Use a soft jewelry polishing cloth to clean tarnish appearing on silver.

The beads and beading cord should withstand toddler tugs and pulls, though the stones are fairly heavy so care should be taken that they don't impact the youngster! As with all beaded jewelry: do not let young toddlers chew on it.

This 20" necklace works well with a variety of necklines including high boatnecks to deeper scoop necks, as well as turtlenecks and collared shirts. Note that the larger size of the beads means the necklace drapes with a wider curve than simple chains.
