What sets the heroines apart from other ladies in Jane Austen's novels is their ability to
genuinely change their attitudes and behaviors when they perceive they have been in the wrong.
Emma Woodhouse shows this quality more than Elinor Dashwood or Fanny Price, but Emma faces evils the
others did not: "having rather too much of her own way, and a disposition to think a little
too well of herself". In addition to being "handsome and clever", she is also rich
and enjoys the comfort of being firmly established at the top of the social order of their village
of Highbury. She imagines herself a matchmaker, and sadly time shows her that her ability to
understand and recommend for others is woefully less than she thought. However, throughout the
deceptions and misunderstandings of those around her, she maintains a sweetness and generosity
of spirit that show her to be a true lady. The delicate pink of the rose quartz gemstones echo this
sweetness and the style is befitting of a gentlewoman, eighteenth century or not. The gemstones hang from
a sterling silver link chain ending with a small toggle clasp.
