young woman cross a river (contact with women considered unwise and dangerous). They continue
traveling until the other monk asks why he did it, to which the first says, "I left the girl there. Are you

represents the woman as the burden the first monk still carries long after the second monk has
already set her down. The woman carried across the river is like a burden one can carry throughout the
journey of life.
