Nephrite is a kind of double-chained inosilicate amphibole more commonly known as jade.
However, jade can refer to two different minerals, this one (nephrite) and jadeite.
Nephrite can be white or cream colored, but most desirable are the iron-rich dark green
gemstones. The Chinese having been carving nephrite jade, which was called yu, for over
3000 years. The gemstone came to embody sovereignty and power in society, and it was important element
in rituals of life and death, symbolizing immortality. This short necklace uses nephrite, freshwater
pearls and gold beads together on hand-knotted silk thread. These classic elements are secured to
sterling silver rollo chain with a lobster clasp. The necklace can be worn as a short necklace or
doubled for a terrific wrap bracelet (see other similar necklace re-uses on the
necklets page).
