In O Pioneers! and The Song of the Lark by Willa Cather, the Southwest features as a place
of adventure and healing; to Emil Bergson, it is a place away from his prairie
home to test himself and subvert his love for his neighbor Marie, and to Thea Kronborg, it is a place to
recover her sense of self and creative voice as an opera singer, all without ever singing a note. Thea's
experience in Panther Canyon is similar to Cather's own experience in 1912 when she went to the Southwest
with her brother to break from the demanding editorial work at McClure's Magazine, the most widely
circulated monthly publication of the time, and found her voice as a writer. It is the wide sweeping
grasslands of the prairie that feature prominently in the novels following this period:
O Pioneers!, The Song of the Lark, and My Antonia contain characters that are products
of this severe and beautiful land. The necklace has both elements, the feldspar of the wide prairie
and the malachite of the arid copper bearing southwest. The style is simple towards southwestern and
incredibly versatile, much like the strength and style of the woman who inspired it.
