Lovely grey labradorite and rainbow moonstone are closer kindred than their names imply; they are actually both labradorite feldspars. Moonstone proper is an orthoclase feldspar and labradorite is a plagioclase feldspar; the difference lies in chemical composition and crystalline organization. Moonstones are more on the alkali/potassium end of the feldspar spectrum and labradorite is more towards the calcium side. Both can show terrific schiller effect of light scattering off thin layers within the stones, but moonstone tends to show more of an overall glow whereas labradorite and rainbow moonstone show rainbow flashes depending on viewing angle. The two necklaces are 20" in length and can be worn together or separately. The rainbow moonstone necklace is a simple pattern of high-quality rondelles interspaced with Delica glass seedbeads (famous Japanese glass known for color and uniformity) and Czech fire-polish glass beads, and the labradorite necklace features faceted teardrops between Hill Tribe silver curved tubes (famous Thai source for fine silver). The necklaces may even be fastened together for one very long light-dark style necklace.

Length: necklaces - 20"

Materials:

  • faceted labradorite beads
  • rainbow moonstone rondelles
  • Czech fire-polished glass beads
  • Japanese glass seedbeads
  • Hill Tribe silver tube beads
  • sterling silver beads
  • sterling silver lobster clasps
  • Soft Flex moderate duty nylon coated stainless steel cord (30 lb. load test)

Care & cleaning: Beading cord may be kinked or broken through hard jerks or severed through prolonged exposure to rough or sharp edges; store necklace flat when not in use to prevent stretching or kinking cord. Clean with warm soapy water and avoid chemical or abrasive cleaners. Use a soft jewelry polishing cloth to clean tarnish appearing on silver.

The components, including the thicker walled Hill Tribe silver tubes, should be robust against tugging hands, especially when worn and grabbed together. (Similar necklace length = similar load on each strand.) As with all beaded jewelry: do not let young toddlers chew on it.

The 20" length is suitable with crew necks, shallow scoop necks and thin turtlenecks; the necklaces may compete with V-necks or deeper scoop necks. Alone, each necklace is a good neutral addition to an outfit, and together they create a greater focal element with more interest.
