Gifts from "down under:" opals and pearls. The Great Artisan Basin in central
and eastern Australia is the source of much of the world's opal gemstones. Millions of
years ago, the area was a large silica-rich inland sea, creating excellent conditions
for the formation of opals, which are amorphous silica high in water content. Precious
opals show play of color from light diffraction in its structure while more common opals
show less glowing color. Pearls from the South Pacific are gorgeous and highly valuable.
The colored freshwater pearls in this 16"-17" necklace are a more
economical choice from China with lovely dark color. The center teardrops are
buff-colored Australian opal with some play of color. The pearls are spaced with
small, uniform Japanese glass seedbeads, and the necklace ends in 14kt gold-fill
large link chain with lobster claw clasp.
